Oval-shaped pieces of yellow concrete could be coming to a street near you in an attempt to fix concerns repeatedly raised at 14 recent town hall meetings focussed on residential traffic safety. Over the last seven months, city councillors, administration, and police officers — in a city that recorded 22 deadly, 2,504-injury and 34,279-non-injury annual collisions in 2015 — have met with concerned community members in every ward to talk about keeping streets safe for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. The evening sessions, which began in Ward 13 last October and finished May 31 at a hotel in Ward 3, included a powerpoint presentation detailing ward-specific collision statistics and a hands-on session where attendees used permanent markers to highlight on a map specific problems in their neighbourhood. Common concerns raised included complaints about speeding, pedestrian safety, the appropriateness of existing traffic control tools, and issues around school drop-offs. ”A lot of the concerns…related to the geometry of the roadway,” said Tony Churchill, the lead of traffic safety for the City of Calgary. Solutions are in the works and will include crosswalk enhancements, reviewing traffic controls and addressing geometric concerns with oval-shaped, 150-millimetre high, concrete units known as Traffic Calming Curbs — a device  Churchill invented last year in an attempt to slow drivers down.  “We’re planning on doing a whole bunch of these (Traffic Calming Curbs) across the city and many of those locations have been identified through these traffic safety meetings,” Churchill said.  City workers install traffic calming curbs on royal Avenue and 8th Street S.W. on Tuesday May 30, 2017. Leah Hennel/PostmediaLeah Hennel / Leah Hennel/Postmedia While the yellow curbs achieve the same results as permanent measures like curb extensions, Churchill said they’re significantly less expensive, they can be moved and adjusted if needed, and they’re much quicker and quieter to install than traditional traffic-calming methods.  The 14 traffic safety workshops were organized after council approved a notice of motion from Ward 12 Coun. Shane Keating last year asking that police work with the city to develop residential traffic enforcement options, with a focus on high-risk areas such as playground zones. In response, the Calgary Police Serice presented council with a residential traffic safety strategy that was approved by elected officials last summer and included a promise to partner with the city to hold traffic safety meetings in every ward — an initiative inspired by a well-attended pedestrian safety meeting Ward 4 Coun.
